18th Anniversary of the Yamal-202 Satellite
Gazprom Space Systems (former – Gascom) launched two its satellites – Yamal-201 and Yamal-202 – on November 24, 2003.
Both satellites were produced by S.P. Korolev Rocket and Space Corporation Energia while the payload was designed by the experts of Gazprom Space Systems on the basis of Alcatel, Alenia and NEC components.
Today, the Yamal-202 Satellite still operates in orbit, 18 years after its launch. In 2019, the Yamal-601 satellite replaced it at 49°E, and the veteran satellite was relocated to 163.5°E, where it continues to support the customer networks, operating in the Far East region of Russia.
Yamal-200 project is the first successful example of using the principles of the project financing and self-repayment in the Russian space industry. The commercial success of the project was achieved thanks to the use of the most advanced technologies that existed at the time of the satellites creation, successful system concept, right market positioning, qualification of the operational departments and efficient work of the commercial departments of Gazprom Space Systems.
